Liberal Party (LP) standard-bearer Mar Roxas and his running mate Leni Robredo made an attempt to win the flock of Jesus Is Lord (JIL) headed by Bro. Eddie Villanueva.
Both Roxas and Robredo wooed the crowd that attended the grand rally of senatorial candidate Joel Villanueva, Bro. Eddie’s son, held in Malolos, Bulacan.
However, during the rally, the founder of the charismatic group, Bro. Eddie, was not available to welcome the candidates at the Malolos Sports and Convention Center. The reason for his absence remained unknown. The only thing known is that he was supposed to address his son’s supporters during the rally.
Despite his absence, Bro. Eddie’s son Joel were welcomed by the Malolos crowd composed mostly of JIL members. Joel is the former head of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority.
The son also hugged and introduced Roxas and Robredo to the crowd. Majority of the crowd wore LP’s signature yellow t-shirts, which has been one of the targets in social media.
During the candidates’ speeches, they thanked and acknowledged Joel’s mother Adoracion, who was seated in the audience, for the welcome and the support.
Both the schedules of Roxas and Robredo were disrupted due to the Bulaca rally. The Malolos was originally not part of their campaign itinerary for the day.
To accommodate the said trip, Roxas had to skipped a gathering of barangay leaders in Pasay City while Robredo made it a point to switch places with her eldest daughter Aika. Aika was supposed to represent Leni in Malolos.
It can be recalled that Bro. Eddie Villanueva lost the 2006 and 2010 elections under the LP banner. JIL claims a membership of four million, but they are generally not known to vote as a bloc. Nonetheless, both Roxas and Robredo are hopeful.
LP candidates Roxas and Robredo are also seeking for the support of El Shaddai and Iglesia ni Cristo, among other religious sects.
