- President Rodrigo Duterte made a joke in front of Indian and Filipino businessmen
- He said he wishes to make 42 virgins as a come-on for travelers
- The President is referring to the way ISIS lure followers
On January 26, President Rodrigo Duterte joked that he would like to entice tourists to the Philippines with the promise of 42 virgins.
Rappler reported that Duterte was talking about how the Muslim extremist group ISIS recruit followers by saying they will get "42 virgins in heaven".
"The come-on is that if you die a martyr, you go to heaven with 42 virgins waiting for you. If I could just make it a come-on also for those who'd like to go to my country," said Duterte.
The president was in India when he said this statement.
He was speaking to Indian and Filipino businessmen at the Philippines-India Business Forum in New Delhi, India.
According to Rappler, when he made the joke, soft laughter was heard among the audience.
He added that the ISIS ideology is "bankrupt", but that they "do not have the monopoly" on promises about virgins.
"They do not have the monopoly of discourse in this field. And I said, one of the most is promising virgins when you go to heaven. I'd like to have the virgins here, not in heaven. God may not allow it," said Duterte.
Since his presidential campaign, Duterte has come under fire for his sexist and objectifying remarks about women.
But his staunch supporters defend him, saying these remarks are just jokes.
As a government official, his supporters say he gives his support on pro-women policies.
