- Presidential son Paolo Duterte filed a case against Senator Antonio Trillanes IV
- He is joined by lawyer Manases Carpio, the husband of Davao Mayor Sara Duterte
- They filed the case because Trillanes implicated them in the Php 6.4 billion shabu smuggling
Resigned Davao City Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte and his brother-in-law Mans Carpio filed a civil case against opposition senator Antonio Trillanes IV on Wednesday, December 27.
The complaint was filed after Trillanes dragged their names into the smuggling of Php 6.4 billion worth of crystal meth through the Bureau of Customs.
In August 2017, the senator accused the presidential son and son-in-law to be members of the "Davao Group", which allegedly deals with smuggling of illegal substances and has close ties in the BOC.
They both denied the allegations during the September 7 Senate inquiry on the scandal.
In a prepared statement, Duterte had this to say about Trillanes:
"Every dog has his day. The law of karma will operate especially to those with evil intent."
The case was raffled electronically to Branch 15 of the Regional Trial Court. It will be under the authority of Judge Mario Duaves.
Duterte has resigned his position as vice mayor of Davao City on December 25.
In a statement, Duterte said he is leaving his post because of delicadeza. He cited the controversies hounding his name, including the aforementioned smuggling scandal and the viral online spat he had with estranged daughter Isabelle Duterte.
Paolo is the first son of President Rodrigo Duterte and has been serving as vice mayor under his sister Mayor Sara.
