Netizens criticize President Rodrigo Duterte’s image on DOLE-initiated OFW cards! Harry Roque III believes Duterte didn’t approve ID design

- Netizens unfavorably reacted on the latest design of the OFW cards that bears the photo of President Rodrigo Duterte

- DOLE Secretary Silvestre Bello III explained why Duterte’s photo is on the ID

- Presidential spokesman Harry Roque III planned to seek clarification about the issue, saying Duterte could be clueless about the design

Netizens were quick to react on the design of the OFW cards that bears the image of President Rodrigo Duterte. The said photo circulated online after Palace Communications Assistant Secretary Mocha Uson reportedly posted it on her Facebook account.

Even though the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has a good intention of placing the president’s picture on the ID, many Filipinos did not accept the design positively.

Based on the report that KAMI obtained from ABS-CBN News, a Facebook user even commented to make the OFW card design neutral by removing Pres. Duterte’s image.

“Can we make it fair and square by removing Mr. Duterte's image so that the OFW can have a peaceful and stress-free life?” the netizen commented, as quoted by the publication. “This is totally wrong! It's better to put the HEROES, or the flag..."

DOLE Secretary Silvestre Bello III, however, explained that the inclusion of the president’s image on the card only aims to emphasize Duterte’s advocacy, especially for the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs).

Bello also revealed that the OFW card will serve as the Overseas Employment Certificate (OEC) of OFWs.

“I just want to to underscore yung concern ng President sa kapakanan ng mga manggagawa,” Bello stated. “Pinapakita namin na ito ay project niya... Hindi naman siya kandidato.”

Meanwhile, Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque III is reportedly seeking clarification over the OFW Card design controversy. According to Roque, he believes that President Duterte did not have any idea about the design.

Roque stressed that the President would have not approved the design, considering his aversions on putting up his own picture in government offices.

“I don’t think he knew about this,” Roque said. “Hindi ba pati ang mga pictures niya sa mga offices pinapalitan niya ng mga heroes?”

As Roque seeks for clarifications whether the design was approved or seen by Duterte, Bello stressed that the card's design was solely the agency's initiative.

Meanwhile, DOLE has already started the release and distribution of the initial batch of 500 OFW cards, PhilStar Global noted. As per Bello, the cards have no expiration and will be part of the government system even after the Duterte administration.

The cards will also soon be recognized by other government offices such as the Social Security System (SSS), PhilHealth,Pag-IBIG funds and many others.

KAMI hopes the issues on the recently released OFW cards will be clarified by the Office of the President.
