Former beauty queen Maggie Wilson is making every Filipina proud when she was named as the first Filipina to complete the 42-kilometer Antarctic Ice Marathon in November. Wilson managed to survive the challenge despite the freezing temperatures and extreme weather conditions.

Based on the report that KAMI obtained from ABS-CBN News, Wilson and her businessman husband, Victor Consunji, were among the 55 runners from six continents who participated the competition in Antarctica last month. As per Wilson, she’s so proud that of her latest achievement because she survived the challenge without getting frostbite and hypothermia.

“It was a constant battle with my mind and body,” Wilson posted on Instagram. “I survived without getting frostbite and hypothermia in one of the most remote locations in the world.”

Despite the fact that she can’t be considered a full-blooded Filipina sometimes, Wilson said she stood at the finish line holding the stand Philippine flag. In fact, she was the “first Filipina to complete a full marathon on Antarctica.”

Even though her achievement is really something to be proud of, Wilson admitted that she faced several challenges during the marathon. In an interview with Preview magazine, Wilson shared that there is no crowd to cheer on you because “you are your own cheerleader most of the time.”

“Because there were only 55 runners, sometimes you’d find yourself running alone with just the snow and the mountains in the background, with nothing but the sound of your shoes crunching the snow with every stride,” Wilson revealed. “At times, being alone felt serene but when you’re out there in sub-zero temperatures with no one else around for a couple of kilometers, it could easily mess with your head.”

Meanwhile, it’s not only Maggie in the Wilson-Consunji household who got a huge achievement when it comes to marathons. The reason? Well, Wilson’s husband, Victor Consunji, was named as the first Filipino finisher in the North Pole Marathon in April 2016.

KAMI salutes Maggie Wilson and Victor Consunji for making fellow Filipinos proud by being the first Pinoys to participate in the Antarctica Ice and North Pole marathons.
