As many as 5,000 scholarships are available to Filipino workers who want to learn how to read and write in a foreign language.
The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) offers language courses in English, Japanese, Mandarin, Arabic, Spanish, Russian, German, and Bahasa.
According to TESDA, the courses are offered not just for overseas Filipino workers but also for locally based Filipino laborers.
"May study nga sa Amerika na sinasabi na ang dapat daw ang isang tao ay magkaroon ng at least two major language na alam plus kultura... 'Pag alam mo na kasi ang kultura sa isang country, it is easier for you to adapt," said Rosanna Urdaneta, deputy director general for policies and planning from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA).
Classes are taken either on the morning shift or the afternoon shift. There are no weekend or evening classes.
The scholarships are available on a first-come first-served basis. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, Filipino, and have graduated high school.
Applicants must register online at the TESDA website.
The following are required documents to apply for the free language courses:
- Original copy of NSO authorized birth certificate or marriage certificate
- Three (3) 1x1 and (1) 2x2 ID pictures with white background
- Any of the following (original and photocopy): Transcript of Records; College or High School diploma; Training Certificate from TESDA registered program; or National certificate or Certificate of Competency issued by TESDA
