Rare and personal letters of our national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, will be displayed and then put up for auction by the Leon Gallery in Makati.
The exhibit will be from November 25 to December 1, while the auction will be on December 2 at 2 PM.
KAMI learned this from GMA News Online.
The four letters are written by Rizal for his sister Maria. These rare pieces of history were in the safekeeping of the descendants of Maria Rizal Cruz and have now been turned over to Leon Gallery.
According to Jaime Ponce de Leon, the owner and curator of the gallery, the family wanted the letters to be passed on to a new generation.
The letters reveal a very close relationship between the two siblings. According to cultural researcher Martin Tinio, it was Maria who was closest to Rizal among all their siblings. Maria was sixth in the family, and Rizal was seventh.
In one of the letters, Rizal advices Maria, whom he calls "pinakamamahal kong kapatid", to be more patient and suffer the difficulties in her marriage to Daniel Cruz, a cockfighting gambler, for the sake of their children.
In another letter, Rizal lists some grocery items he needs while detained in Dapitan. He asks Maria to send them to him.
Bids for each of the four letters starts at one million pesos.
