Three-time Most Valuable Player Alyssa Valdez of Ateneo Lady Eagles ended her UAAP career with a bittersweet smile as her team lost the championship against arch-rival La Salle Lady Spikers.
Amidst chants of “M-V-P” from the crowd at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, Valdez was seen making her rounds of the court to acknowledge the people who have been supportive of her and of the ball game in general.
She even got a hug from the La Salle coaching staff led by head coach Ramil De Jesus.
In her own Twitter account, Valdez acknowledged the end of her UAAP volleyball career and thanked her supporters. “Sa lahat ng sumigaw, nag dasal sa venue, bahay at kahit saan mang lugar THANK YOU. Next time, kasama nyo na akong manunuod. [blue heart icon],” the post read.
In a show of support, Kiefer Ravena who has been linked romantically to Valdez posted a picture of him and the volleyball MVP.
"Heroes come and go but Legends live forever. 5 years in the UAAP. 5 years of idiotism as friends. 5 years of being each other's biggest critic," the caption of his Instagram post read.
Ravena also highlighted Valdez’s contribution to their alma mater, Ateneo De Manila University: "Thank you for serving the school with loyalty, humility and dedication. You showed how one should represent his/her school. Along with thousands and thousands of your fans, we all agree that there will never ever be another Alyssa Valdez in the UAAP."
"We are fortunate to witness greatness. Thank you, idol! Goodluck on Saturday! Never ever fear the results of your best effort. Ps. Im still the better Phenom," the caption read.
It was notable that Valdez played like a true MVP in her last UAAP game for Ateneo that however ended in a heartbreaking runner-up finish. Her spikes, for which she has become a UAAP phenom, had difficulty getting through the blocks of La Salle. But the MVP still gave it her all and carried her team to four sets, 25-19, 21-25, 16-25, 16-25, ending the game with 31 points.
Taking to Instagram, Valdez posted a black and white picture of her with the caption: “Five great years. I wouldn’t change anything, wouldn’t ask for more. Thank you, UAAP. Thank you, Ateneo. [heart icon] #PHENOMOUT”
