A baby in India died 10 minutes after being born with a very rare birth defect called the "mermaid syndrome".
They say that it was the fourth known case in the whole world while it is declared to be the first occurrence in India.
According to press reports in India, a woman from Pradesh gave birth to a child that has its legs twinned together which resembles closely to a mermaid.
The rare baby died after 10 minutes.
According to Dr. Vandana Arya, the gynecologist who performed the delivery,
“I have never seen a case like this before. We have seen congenital disorders amongst children born with deformities, but this was an extremely rare case.”
She also added the baby's unusual features and the difficulty in determining the newborn's gender.
“The baby was born in a fish-like body, and had its hands spread like fins, which made this case even more unique. The upper body of the baby was absolutely functional but the lower body was not developed,”
Dr. Arya also mentioned the possibilities that affected the baby's development inside the womb.
Several causes such as excessive medicine intake, vitamin deficiency, genetics, past history or even maternal diabetes.
If the baby somehow managed to survive further - an operation still wouldn't be possible due to the undeveloped body. Though kidneys can be transplanted but the risk is too high and the survival is considerably low.
