Teacher Rich Thomson of Devon battles the classroom every school day, on the rest days he just wants to indulge in his hobby – surfing. He does not want to do battle on his days off. However a little shark had other ideas. Fortunately Rich was wearing a heavy duty wetsuit. He felt something by his leg and looked down and saw this 3 ft shark shaking his head with his jaws clamed on his wet suit. Rich reached down and thumped it on its head. The shark got the message and swam off.
From Thomson’s description, Marc Dando, a wildlife specialist feels that it was probably a Smooth Hound shark. These sharks do swim in the UK waters but there has never been an attempted attack. Dando feels that the shark was just warning Rich that he had invaded the shark’s territory.
Ali Hood who works at the Plymouth Sharks Trust feels that the shark was disorientated. The attack happened near a river mouth so the sea may have been rough. There are a large number of sharks along the UK coast. The most common are the Smooth Hound, Tope and Cat Sharks.
The Sun reports that Thomson has not been deterred from surfing, he will just be a bit more aware in future.
