The web site www.ancestry.com can be thanked for clearing up a 23 year old mystery. 23 years ago Richard Hoagland phoned his wife, Linda to tell her he was feeling sick. He was going to go to the hospital but she mustn’t worry or come with him.
That was the last she would hear from him until he sent their boys a birthday card on their next birthdays. Ten years later there was no further word from him. The subsequent police investigation could discover nothing so he was declared dead.
23 years later a man was investigating his ancestry and building up his family tree when he discovered that his deceased uncle, Terry Symansky got married three years after his tragic death. He took his findings to the police and an investigation was opened.
This led to uncovering Hoagland’s deception. Instead of going to the hospital all those years ago, he had travelled to Florida and stayed with the late Symansky’s father. He discovered Terry’s death certificate and using the details applied for a duplicate birth certificate. With this in hand he was able to get his driver’s licence and a pilot’s licence. He met and married Mary a few years later and had a child with her.
According to Goodhousekeeping.com he has been arrested and charged with several misdemeanours.
