Nothing is more devastating for parents than having to see your kid suffer. Keith and Brooke Desserich went through hell when they learned that their six-year-old daughter Elena was diagnosed with a rare disease.
Elena was diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), an incurable childhood brain tumor. Doctors claimed that she has five months to live, but she fought the disease for nine months long.
During her diagnosis, Keith wrote little notes for Elena’s younger sister Grace about their memories together. Little that Keith know, this has inspired Elena to write notes.
The family was remodelling their house during her diagnosis but they were surprised to find notes all over the place – inside books and boxes, inside their dresser drawers and briefcases, even boxes that contained Christmas ornaments. For two years they discovered her little gifts.
The family accepted the loss and shared some of Elena’s notes along with their own diary entries in the form of the New York Times best-seller, “Notes Left Behind.”
