"Bezoar is a term used to describe a mass of foreign material found in the stomach, and occasionally, in the intestine. The most common bezoars, which consist of plant material, is called phytobezoars. However, in the following case, it is not plants which are found, but a bunch of metals. This rare condition is called metalbezoar."
This woman with a psychiatric disorder presented with intense stomach pains and heavy vomiting for about 10 days prior.
Upon doctor’s examination of her x-ray scans, she was found to have something bizarre inside her stomach. She immediately had to undergo stat operation in order to save her life.
The x-rays revealed ingested foreign materials. Urgent exploration was then done.
After the operation, an assortment of nails, pens, toothbrush, spoon, wood, and metal chain were just some of the many things extracted from the 43-year-old woman’s stomach.
Based on this report, this woman has had a history of foreign body ingestion, and is advised for psychiatric evaluation and therapy, under strict supervision, in order to prevent recurrence.
