The Batang Gilas of the Philippines dominated Thailand in an 86-49 win to bag the championship trophy in the SEABA U-18 tournament on Thursday, April 18 in Medan, Indonesia.
By taking the gold, the Batang Gilas cagers earned one of the three spots for the FIBA Asia Under-18 tourney that will be held in Iran this July. Runners-up Thailand and Indonesia will also join the Philippines as representatives of Southeast Asia.
Ateneo de Cebu standout Joshua Sinclair led the young Filipinos with 15 points, while Gian Mamuyac chipped in 14 markers. Solid contributions were also provided by John Bahio, Jonas Tibayan, and Evan Nelle. All three finished in double figures in the finals.
After trailing by 17-19 in the first period, Filipinos turned it up in the second quarter and outscored the Thais, 31-13. They closed the half with a 48-32 advantage and never looked back, en route to a 37-point victory.
Batang Gilas steamrolled every opposition in the six-country tournament with an average winning margin of 44.7 points. They only faced a serious challenge from a game Malaysian squad, but they still managed to come out on top.
