Ecuador's “Hero Dog” dies after saving 7 quake victims

The courageous four year old yellow Labrador Dayko braved the wreckage, helping the Ibarra Fire service save seven victims buried under the rubble. Dayko exhausted from such endeavour died because of extreme fatigue.

The duty he has been giving to the rescue team has been done for more than three and a half years. It was hailed Hero for the town after the 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit the city of Pedarnales in Ecuador last week leaving seven victims trapped beneath piles of rubble.

A Facebook post from Ibara Fire service’s page, said that the courageous mutt suddenly collapsed during search operations and eventually died from “massive coronary myocardial infarction and acute respiratory failure”.

Rescuers on site did their best to resuscitate the champion Labrador but to no avail as the dog perished.

Fire fighters (who worked and cared for Dayko) gave their respects for the brave and gentle mutt on The Telegraph.

“This four legged friend gave his life in the line of duty. Thank you Dayko for your heroic efforts in Pedernales and in various emergencies where you were present”.

“You held high the name of the K9 unit”. The recent April 16 quake left a total devastation for the country. It claimed lives to a total of 654 people while leaving 2,000 others wounded.
