A Japanese princess is set to lose her royal title once she marries her commoner boyfriend.
While this may seem like a plot twist we only see on TV, it can actually happen in real life.
It will happen to Princess Mako soon, once she marries her long-time boyfriend Kei Komuro.
Princess Mako is the oldest granddaughter of Japan’s Emperor Akihito.
Her father, Prince Akishino, is second in line to the throne.
As it is in Japan, the law states that female members of the royal family shall leave the royal household upon marriage to a commoner.
Despite this, it is reported that the royal family welcomed and approved their engagement, and are very supportive of their union.
With the official engagement set next month, we all can’t wait for the wedding which is slated to happen next year.
Princess Mako is an affiliate researcher at the University Museum of the University of Tokyo.
For his part, Kei Komuro works as a legal assistant in a law firm. Currently, he is also taking a master’s degree of International Corporate Strategy, majoring in corporate law.
