KAMI followed this story of a 79-year old grandmother who shows us that age is definitely not a hindrance to achieving your dreams.
Lola Salvacion Nacario has been making the rounds online. Netizens praise her for her determination and perseverance, traits that enabled her finish Grade 10 despite her age.
According to Nanay Saly, as she is fondly called, her father used to serve in the army, thus they were forced to transfer places every so often while growing up.
Her studies were affected, making her stop school each time her father was to be destined some place else.
Life happened. She got married. She had kids. And grand kids. Finishing school took a backseat and became the least of her priorities then.
Nanay Saly recounted the many difficulties she encountered as a student. Apart from mingling with younger classmates, probably the most trying challenge was when she suffered from mild stroke last year. But even that was not a hindrance for her to continue pursuing her dream.
She enrolled in the Alternative Learning System for three years, and a year at the Open University.
She used to dream of becoming a military nurse back then, since her father, her husband, and her 5 kids all served in the army.
She felt like something in her life was still amiss, because unlike the other members of her family, she was not able to fulfill her dream of serving the country.
As Nanay Saly puts it, "May kulang kasi hindi ako naka-serve sa bayan".
