According to Fr. Joel, the 37-year-old San Antonio de Padua of Sta. Clara Church – which was made of wood – has become dilapidated.

This means that his community needs to build a new church structure.

He and his parishioners decided to build a new church beside the old one but it would cost them P9 million.

The foreign grant that they received and their parish’s P110-K fund were not enough to cover the cost of the new church.

For this reason, Fr. Joel decided to take matters into his own hands by selling fish.

“I am selling fish every day to augment the need to construct our church. We are a small community but our project is big, so we need to have an undertaking to help build our church,” the hardworking priest explained.

When he told his parish council about his plan, the members laughed at him because they could not imagine that a priest would be selling fish.

“But I told them, I can sacrifice for the church because our church is dilapidated and we need to source out funds. I need to do this or else the laborers won’t get paid as we need to shell out P20,000 weekly for the labor,” Fr. Joel said.

By selling fish, the priest makes P1,000 to P3,000 a day.

Fr. Joel might not have a wife and children to provide for, but he is married to the church and this inspires him to work hard every day.
