Batang Gilas clobbers Indonesia by 40, sets up Finals duel with Thailand

The basketball youth team of the Philippines crushed host Indonesia by 40 points, 113-73 and maintained an immaculate record in the elimination round of the SEABA Under-18 Championship in Medan, Indonesia. They will play the championship match against Thailand on Thursday.

Before Wednesday’s victory, the Batang Gilas squad defeated the hapless Singaporean side by 25 points, 87-72. Whatever the outcome on Thursday, the Philippines is assured of a spot in the FIBA-Asia Under-18 Championship to be held in Iran this July.

Ateneo de Cebu standout Joshua Sinclair led his teammates with 25 points and 10 rebounds in the rout of Indonesia. The Filipino-Australia had an almost flawless shooting night, draining 12 of his 13 baskets. Co-captain Jolo Mendoza chipped in 14 points, Jonas Tibayan had 13, and Theo Flores contributed 11.

The Philippines only had a slim 22-18 advantage in the first period before stretching the gap by 13 at the half, 47-34. Floodgates opened in latter part of the third canto, and the young Filipinos never looked back en route to a rousing win.

The gold is within reach of the Nationals if they win against Thailand, whom they beat in the opener, 101-45.
