A Filipino cab driver simply did what any cab driver should do when a passenger’s belongings got left behind.
But for this act of integrity, Reggie Cabututan was given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity by the Australian tourist who had forgotten to take his valuables with him after getting off his cab.
Trent Shields was touring the city of Baguio in the Philippines when he took Reggie’s service.
Moments after he got off, he realized that he had left behind his luggage, which contained his passport, cash, a laptop and other expensive items.
Trent and his friend Ace were about to enter a police station to report the loss when they saw the cab.
“Never was a sight more welcoming than the smiling face of this driver,” wrote Ace in a Facebook post.
Reggie returned the items and Trent was overjoyed.
The driver’s story of honesty and integrity found its way to City Hall. The mayor decided to hold a ceremony to honor Reggie.
Trent was about to take his flight back home but decided to return to Baguio to attend the ceremony.
The grateful Australian traveler used the opportunity to reward the driver with a full scholarship in his software development school.
Trent also set up a GoFundMe page to raise money to finish the construction of the cab driver’s house. The latter has a wife and four young children.
