KAMI received a story about Casey, a mother and student, who saw a homeless man outside Dunkin’ Donuts. He was gathering as much change for a meal. Then, he goes into the shop with a dollar and some change. Casey goes to the man and treats him with a cup of coffee and a bagel. She asked him to sit with her and they talked about his life.
The homeless man is Chris. From their conversation, he said that he did not know his father and lost his dear mother to cancer. Now, he lives in the streets and took narcotics. He was grateful for her attention and realized that there are still kind-hearted people in this world. Most people would just give him food, a drink or some change but Casey surpassed all those generous people by having a chat with him. Chris prepared a little gift for her to express his gratitude. This gift was not just a simple thank you letter but it also says that she saved his life!
When she got to her car and opened the note, she couldn't believe what it said.
She says in her post that Chris did not want to talk but she insisted. They talked for a few hours about his life and other things. Her original post follows.
“Today I went to Dunkin’ Donuts and saw a clearly homeless guy sitting on the side of the road and picking up change. Eventually I saw him stroll into Dunkin, as he was counting his change to buy something I began to get super annoying and talked to him over and over again even when he didn’t really want to talk.”
Casey found him as one of the most honest and sincere persons she had met. As she looked at her watch, it was time for her class so she told Chris that she needed to go. He asked her to wait for awhile so that he can write something for her. He gave her a crumpled up receipt and apologized for his handwriting, smiled and left.
She opened her car, sat in the driver's seat and opened his note that gave her a shock.
Have you ever done the same to a homeless person? Try it and maybe you could change his or her life for the better.
