- The owner of the dog and cat cafe that has been under criticism finally broke his silence
- A Facebook user shared his disappointing experience upon seeing the 'unhealthy' animals in the cafe
- Owner Don Michael Perez explained his side in a Facebook post regarding the issue
After a netizen shared a post about his disappointing experience after he visited a dog and cat cafe in Quezon City, the owner of the said cafe released a statement and explained his side.
In a post posted by Bengal Brew / Wolf & Bear, the cafe owner Don Michael Perez expressed his sentiments over the viral Facebook post about their alleged improper treatment of the animals.
"There is an fb post being circulated that details a customer's unpleasant experience in our cafe. While I'm trying to get to the bottom of this, a number of people have already prematurely judged us.
I hope you will take the time to read and hopefully understand our side of the story.
My name is Don Michael Perez. I am a TV Director and Writer, a father to my son and 50 plus fur babies. I have been keeping pets (cats, dogs, birds) all my life. I have never been involved before in any money-making venture involving my pets.
I opened my cat and dog cafes because I wanted all of them to be in one place where I can visit them conveniently. I have a unit right across my cafes that's why I chose this particular location. I am not a business person. I don't even look at the daily sales because I fear that when I start crunching numbers I would realize that I'm not really earning anything from this venture, and decide to just fold up the business -- a thought that enters my mind specially now.
It really pains me when I get accused of making money out of my pets. I have taken care of them long before I opened my cafes, and will continue to do so long after I decide to just quit.
I do not claim to be the perfect pet parent, nor do I claim that my pets are perfect. Like any living being, they get sick, they get stressed, they have health issues. But that doesn't mean they are being neglected, or that I am being remiss on my responsibilities.
God knows I spend half my waking hours attending to the needs of my pets, and have spent a fortune on their maintenance and care. Am I complaining? No. I just find it unfair that I'm being judged as a pet parent based on one visit to my cafe. How about the many other times we made a lot of people happy and satisfied? Surely that should count too.
While I do not begrudge criticism, and anyone is entitled to their own opinion, what bothers me is the prejudice of other people who have not even personally visited us and are now forming judgement based on a post and some pictures.

It is true that a few of our dogs are suffering from skin issues (hotspots, dermatitis, ticks and fleas) but we have been trying to address the problem. Our vet bill runs to about 10K a week, and though this is a huge dent on my PERSONAL MONEY, I have never been known to give up on my pets.
I don't have a policy of hiding my imperfect dogs. I don't want to deprive them of the social contact they crave for if they are isolated. Betty -- our St. Bernard was diagnosed with hip dysplasia and our vet said she probably won't be able to walk again. Did I give up on her? No. Did I hide her from sight? No. I let her stay in the cafe so she can get encouragement from the other dogs.
Miraculously she can now walk again. I kept caring for her until she was well again, and that's the same thing I'm doing to all my other pets with health issues. Besides, this is their permanent home so where else can they stay while they are being treated? But out of 20 plus dogs that we have, only a handful of them have health issues so I think it's a glittering generality to say that we deserve to be reported to the authorities?!
I am painfully realizing that it might have been a mistake to open my cafes and subject my pets to public scrutiny. I'm not cut out for this. All I'm good at is writing and directing. As for being a pet parent, I am trying my darned best, and I think not everyone is entitled to judge me on that.
That being said, I will personally look into this matter and do what needs to be done. Thank you for your support."
