Senator Allan Peter Cayetano called his rival, Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, a “Poetector” and defended his running-mate, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, amidst allegations of corruption against the mayor.
Cayetano claimed that Trillanes, who is running independently for the position of vice president, was doing the expose in support of Senator Grace Poe’s presidential candidacy. Trillanes has in the past publicly made his support of Poe.
“The allegation is obviously a desperate ploy to bring down Mayor Duterte and promote Senator Trillanes’ preferred presidential bet, Sen. Grace Poe,” he said.
Trillanes made an expose showing that Duterte had a Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) account which contains P227 million as of 2014 and was not declared in the mayor’s Statement of Assets, Liabilities, and Net worth (SALN).
In a report by Inquirer, Trillanes responded to Cayetano and said that the ‘Poetector’ tag is nothing but a corny joke and wondered whether his colleague could come up with something better.
“If I were him, I would stay on the sidelines or else I might go after him next,” said Trillanes, sending a warning to Cayetano as he could be the next target of his expose.
On her part, Senator Grace Poe advised Cayetano to speak directly to Trillanes and not implicate her in the latest expose against Duterte.
“Why blame me? Doesn’t he (Cayetano) know Senator Trillanes who is his partner in a lot of hearings in the Senate? If there is one person in the Senate you can’t stop in investigating anomalies—whether you are friend, ally or foe—that is Senator Trillanes,” said Poe.
Poe said now is the time for Duterte to face his own issues and disprove allegations of corruption.
“I have always been the target of their allegations that they say I have to disprove. Well it’s his turn to disprove these allegations against him,” she said.
