Batang Gilas, the Philippine national under-18 team, remains undefeated after claiming its third win in the 2016 Southeast Asian Basketball Association Under-18 Championships being held in Medan, Indonesia.
In a report from ABS-CBN News, the young Philippine team faced the Malaysians Monday evening (April 25) and posted a clear victory of 87-68 on the boards. The win came after the team secured victory over Thailand and Laos.
Batang Gilas was led to its third consecutive victory by Gian Mamuyac with 18 points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals, while Joshua Sinclair had a double-double of 14 points and 11 boards.
The Filipinos actually trailed by two in the first half until Mamuyac’s jumper fired the 44-28 run in the second half. By then, Malaysia was not able to catch up and gave way to Batang Gilas posting a double digit lead in the third quarter. By the fourth quarter, there was no doubt that the Batang Gilas was in it for a third straight win.
The team is expected to continue its domination especially after it started big with a 101-45 win against Thailand and walloping Laos with an emphatic 81 point lead.
In the game against Thailand, five players scored in double-digits for Batang Gilas led by team captain Jolo Mendoza who had 16 points. Joshua Sinclair added a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds off the bench. The boys stood out compared to their Thai-coutnerparts who were nto able to post double digit scores.
The win against Laos was even more emphatic after Batang Gilas posted a 133-52 victory.
Alain Madrigal led Batang Gilas with 23 points. Theo Joshua Flores and Joshua Sinclair contributed to the huge win with 19 points and 18 points respectively, making it extremely difficult for Laos to close the gap.
Batang Gilas will be facing Singapore and host-country Indonesia next, in this tournament which serves as the qualifier to the 2016 FIBA Asia Under-18 Championship. The top three finishers of the tournament will qualify for this year's Championship to be held in Iran by July.
