The Batang Gilas players of the Philippines were off to a strong start as they trashed Thailand on Saturday, April 23 via 101-45 win in the opening day of the 2016 SEABA U-18 Championship in Medan, Indonesia.
High school standouts from different regions of the country are in Indonesia to vie for one of the three spots in the tournament to qualify for this year’s 24th FIBA Asia U-18 Championship that will be held in Iran this July.
Ateneo High School standout Jolo Mendoza led the RP Youth Team with 16 points with a 4-of-5 shooting clip from rainbow country. Xavier’s Rendell Joseph Lee and Cebuano Joshua Sinclair contributed 12 points each, while John Bryle Bahio finished with 10 points and 7 rebound.
Batang Gilas made a breakaway in the second period and ended the halftime with a 52-24 advantage. They limited the Thais to a measly seven points in the third quarter.
The Philippines will next face Laos this Sunday, April 24 at 4 p.m. Batang Gilas will take on Malaysia on Monday and Singapore on Tuesday. They will wrap up their elimination campaign with a game against host Indonesia on Wednesday.
