Donaire defends title with a technical knockout
The Filipino Flash defended his WBO World Featherweight title in his first title defense against Hungarian Zsolt Bedak. The Filipino boxer knocked the Hungarian down 3 times, scoring a technical knockout victory.
The bout, which happened last Saturday at the Cebu City Sports Center, was stopped at the 2:44 mark because the bloodied Bedak couldn't handle any more punishment. Donaire, too quick for the Hungarian, always landed instant counters against his opponent. His opponent, while bravely trying to control the tempo by leading the punches, was met with a fistful of glove for every attempt he made to out-do Donaire. Donaire scored two knockdowns in round two, both using counter left hooks. Bedak survived that round by bell.
Donaire finished off the match with left uppercut followed by a right hand. It is only the second time that Donaire defended his title. The last one was in 2009 against Raul Martinez which he handily won. The estimated attendance numbers for the outdoor venue are estimated to be between 20,000 to 25,000.
