- A teacher from a catholic school in Hove, UK was sentenced in court for having a sexual relationship with a pupil
- She had developed a crush on him when she was 14 and a relationship started when she was 17 after he invited her to tutor his own teenage daughter
- The relationship was consensual and he was given two suspended sentences
Andrew Berry (48) became enraged when the girl ended the relationship after a year. It was heard that a friend of the girl's had told her father what had been going on.
He stormed over to her home to confront her and was shortly thereafter arrested and charged with two counts of having sexual activity with someone while in a position of trust.
He broke down in tears in the Lewes Crown Court when his sentence was handed out.
Berry is divorced and has two teenage children. Him and the girl would meet up for sex at least twice a week. He was suspended from his position as head teacher in the English department of Cardinal Newman Catholic School.
The relationship with the girl started when she made a pass at him after he had invited her to his flat to tutor his daughter in maths. The judge said that he was aware that she was infatuated with him and should never have asked her to come to his home in the first place.
The school was later investigated regarding safeguarding fears and was found to be unsatisfactory in this regard.
