- Sylys Hernandez died after horrific abuse at the hands of his father, but the baby boy was just three months old
- It was reported that in his short life, he had suffered 26 rib fractures, along with other injuries
- Sylys' mother had been jailed on drug charges, so she was not in the picture
Isaac Hernandez (26) of Nampa, Idaho, was sentenced to 26 years in prison for the abuse of his infant son, resulting in his death.
Aside from the injuries to little Sylys' ribs, he also had broken legs and his frenulum (a part of the mouth) was torn, most likely from being punched in the face.
It was heard in court that an anonymous person had contacted child welfare authorities to report the abuse, but no one had attended to the case.
Sylys' mother gave birth to him while she was in prison and his dad automatically got custody of their son.
A coroner noted that Sylys had bruises to his face, penis, and hands. Another witness stated that he/she had seen a 'fist-sized' blood stain in the baby's crib.
Others stated that Sylys was hardly ever taken out of his car seat and that he rarely smiled.
The coroner also noted that he was severely malnourished and dehydrated. The nature of the injuries indicate that Sylys had been abused over a period of time and that his death was not due to one isolated fit of rage.
It was also heard in court that someone witnessed Hernandez punching the child in the stomach and pushing his face into a pillow to stifle his crying.
