The National University Pep Squad was once again hailed as the champions for the fourth consecutive year as they gained 711 points in the UAAP Cheerdance Competition held at the SMART Araneta Coliseum, defeating competing cheer dance groups of De La Salle University, University of Santo Tomas, Adamson University, National University, Ateneo de Manila University, Far Eastern University and University of the East.
The NU Pep Squad who also bagged the 1st place in the Group Stunts and won the special awards for Best Toss and the Best Pyramid with their futuristic theme showed the whole Araneta that they are still deserving of the title despite the absence of the University of the Philippines Pep Squad after filing an appeal regarding last year's results.
The FEU Cheering Squad meanwhile made a comeback in the top 3 as they landed on the 2nd place garnering 658.5 points with their Broadway-themed performance piece while Adamson Pep Squad's win on the 3rd spot gaining 655 points pleasantly surprised everyone as they showcased their water-themed routine.
The CDC champions were confident that they would regain the title, considering their efforts to make every pyramids, tosses, tumblings, and dances as perfect as possible.
NU Pep Squad coach Ghicka Bernabe said in an interview:
“After that very controversial na pagkapanalo (last year), gusto naming patunayan sa tao na kaya kami nandito, kasi binibigay namin best namin.”
UP Pep Squad earlier announced that they will not participate in this year's cheerdance competition after they protested last year, saying that there were anomalies with the competition's results in 2015.
