- President Duterte expressed his support for the possibility of a Pacquiao presidency
- Senator Manny said that he is not closing his doors to the possibility of it, and netizens are quick to say that they do not approve
- The Senator has yet to discuss the idea of running for the highest position with his team
When asked if he considers running for the highest government position in the Philippines, Senator Manny Pacquiao said that he has no plans but he is not closing his doors for the possibility. This statement has earned the anger of the Filipino netizens.
This statement came after President Rodrigo Duterte jokingly endorsed the Senator to be president.
Duterte, while raising the hand of Pacquiao during a courtesy call in Malacañang, said in front of the media, “For President na ‘to!”
In response, Pacquiao stated, “Wala pa sa isip natin ‘yan, focus tayo sa trabaho natin (I haven’t thought about it, I want to focus on my work).”
Netizens are divided on the issue.
Doc Bob said, "Masyadong matulin ang lipad nang ambisyon at pangarap mo Packy! Spare the country. I know you have the best intentions but it is not enough to run this country with so many complex problems. Mag boxing ka nalang or mag boxing trainer or promoter ka nalang."
Others say that the presidency is no joke, and that Manny Pacquiao is not at all qualified to the job. In fact, many say that he has not yet proven himself as a good Senator and what more the President of the Philippines.
However, the Senator said that he is yet to discuss with anyone the possibility of running for president.
Pacquiao said that the President endorsed him because both of them have the same advocacy.
“Siguro nakita niya na pareho naman kami ng advocacy, pareho kami ng nararamdaman so nasabi niya yun pero sa akin trabaho lang ako,” clarified the senator.
(Maybe he saw that we have the same advocacy, that we feel the same so he said that, but for me my priority is work.)
He added that he wants to focus now on boxing and his responsibility as Philippine senator.
“Hindi naman natin sinasabing sarado. Ang pagiging Presidente ang Panginoon ang naglalagay dyan. Masyadong mataas yan para pangarapin. Gampanan natin yung trabaho natin para marami tayong matutulungan na mga Pilipino, Pacquiao explained.
(We are not saying that we are closing our doors. The Lord is the one assigning the President. That position is too high to dream of. Let us do our responsibility for now to help more Filipinos.)
Pacquiao further said that the government has to resolve certain issues within six years and his focus now is committing himself to promoting the change Duterte envisions for the country.
