- Ahmad Chamma appeared in the Burwood Local Court last Friday on rape charges after he 'married' a 13-year-old girl
- Their union is said to have been 'sanctioned' in a traditional religious ceremony
- The 26-year-old was denied bail
Chamma was charged with 25 counts of sexual intercourse with a child between the ages of 10 and 14 and then denied bail in court.
Chamma is said to have met the girl as long ago as 2012 and has been in a sexual relationship with her since then. At that time she would have been around 9 years old.
After their marriage, she lived with him in his home in New South Wales.
The faith of Islam typically condones pedophilia, citing reasons of preserving a girl from family dishonor by preventing premarital sex. Other reasons include settling of disputes between tribes and families.
However, these unions are most common in third-world countries - such as Pakistan and Afghanistan - not in countries such as Australia, the United Kingdom and the US.
The unnamed minor is not living in a children's home for her protection. Media reports do not give details of her own family.
