La Salle wins vs Ateneo in set 1 volleyball
In today's highly anticipated match by rival schools De La Salle University and Ateneo De Manila, the DLSU Lady Spikers reigned supreme over the Lady Eagles after defeating them in straight sets of 25-22, 25-22, and 25-21 in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Finals Game 1.
In the first finals game of this year's 78th season of the UAAP women's volleyball game, the Lady Spikers from DLSU emerged victorious in three straight sets against rival and current champion Ateneo Lady Eagles. Kim Dy placed 15 markers, while Mika Reyes with 13.
Things did not go smoothly with De La Salle during the early game of the first set. The Lady Eagles held the advantage in the early game with a 7-1 advantage versus the Taft Archers. However, this did not dampen the determination of the Lady Spikers and they fought with everything to retake the advantage with a 16-14 heading into a second technical timeout. The Lady Spikers were rewarded for their efforts, capping off the first set with a solid 3-point advantage of 25-22.
The second set was more exciting than the first, with Ateneo again putting the pressure on the green team finishing the mid-game with a 16-15 lead led by Kim Gequillana. The blue school held their advantage until 21-18, still leading after consecutive points from Lady Eagles Alyssa Valdez. But with sheer valor and heart, the Lady Spikers did not waiver and fought back with a 7-1 score, finishing the set with 25-22, their win.
The Taft ladies finally tasted the early advantage with a solid defense in the third set, the mid-game 16-11 to their side. Despite attempts by Lady Eagles team captain to break the La Salle defense, De La Salle held on. Cyd Demecillo increased the margin to 21-15, a sizable lead quite from what happened in the first two sets. Despite Ateneo whittling away the advantage to four, 22-18, Joy Baron denied the Lady Eagles this momentum by stopping them and maintaining a 5-point lead at 23-18. However, the Lady Eagles would not throw in the towel that easily. Lady Eagles Jhoana Maraguinot and captain Valdez each scored one point needed to narrow the lead to 23-20. When De La Salle Ara Galang score a point, they became one step closer to the match point. A service error by Kim Fajardo gave Ateneo another chance, hoping for an upset. These hopes were shattered when Galang rallied the set for a push, finishing with 25-21.
Lady Eagle team captain Alyssa Valdez is the only one in their team to score double digits, 17 points.
La Salle coach Ramil De Jesus attributed the success to cool teamwork and a level headed composure. "Mas relaxed 'yung mga bata kanina kahit down kami nung first set... Alam ko na babalik 'yung composure ng mga bata." said De Jesus.
Don't miss out on the next game! It's happening on April 27 at the Mall of Asia Arena.
