President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday promised to God that he will stop cursing and swearing. According to the President, he made the decision while on a plane home from a three-day visit to Japan.
“While on up there on my way here, I heard a voice telling me to stop swearing or the plane will crash in midair, and so I promised to stop,” Duterte said at the Davao International Airport.
He added that his promise to God is also his promise for the Filipino people.
“A promise to God is a promise to the people,” the President said.
Duterte has made international headlines for his foul mouth. He infamously cursed at U.S. President Barrack Obama, calling the leader a “son of a whore.”
The President has also cursed other sectors who have expressed their concern regarding his aggressive war against illegal drugs and the spate of summary killings under his administration.
Some of the sectors on the receiving end of Duterte’s curses include the European Union, the United Nations, the Catholic Church and the Commission on Human Rights.
He has also been criticized for his hostile statements towards long-time foreign allies such as the U.S. government and the U.N. while trying to make friends with Russia and China – which has till denied the validity of the UN tribunal’s ruling regarding the West Philippine Sea territorial dispute.
