- The contestants were tasked to choose between US presidential candidates Clinton and Trump to stop war and violence - Miss Grand International brand's main thrust
Of the 76 countries from around the globe competing for the title Miss Grand International 2016, Philippine bet Nicole Cordoves was crowned first runner-up during the coronation night held in Las Vegas, Nevada on Tuesday.
It is the highest recognition the Philippines has ever had in the four-year-old beauty contest.
Cordoves, who was one of the crowd's favorites, gets booed during the pageant's question and answer portion.
Each of the top five candidates was asked to choose between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump - the two candidates running for the American presidency - to help end war and violence.
Cordoves answer was this.
"I would choose Donald Trump to stop the war and violence with me because if we choose him to switch to our side there won't be war and violence anymore. I will also make sure that he will read my speeches to stop the war and violence," she stated.
On the other hand, the Miss Grand International 2016 first runner-up clarified in an interview with ABS-CBN that she is not endorsing Trump and reiterated that her support goes to Hillary Clinton.
"I do not support Donald Trump. I would vote for Hillary Clinton but I answered Donald Trump because the question was if you were going to choose someone between Donald and Hillary to help in stopping the war and violence campaign I will choose Donald Trump because if he is on our side there won't be war anymore. There won't be violence because they say keep your friends close and your enemies closer so that was the twist I was trying to make," Cordoves elucidated.
Miss USA, has similarly picked Trump as an answer during the bout's q&a whereas Indonesia, Thailand and Puerto Rico chose Clinton and praise her for fortifying women's rights.
Here is Cordoves interview, where she explained that she would rather vote for Clinton.
