- The PNP alerted the public about a possible Abu Sayyaf terror attack in Cebu
- According to intelligence reports, six members of the bandit group entered Cebu
- The police urged the public to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activity in the region
The Philippine National Police (PNP) in Central Visayas alerted the public about possible terror attacks in Region 7 after receiving intelligence reports that six members of the terror group Abu Sayyaf have made their way to Cebu on Friday.
According to the intelligence reports received by the Regional Intelligence Division, the group is being led by Commander Messiah to abduct famous personalities and conduct bomb attacks on public areas.
“Based on our monitoring, they came here to abduct prominent personalities although bombing malls and other establishments may also be one of their aims,” Supt. Julian Entoma revealed.
In order to prevent these possible terror attacks, the police are asking the help of the public and even Muslim communities about being vigilant and reporting suspicious activities in the region.
“We continue to monitor. We already asked help from the Muslim communities in Cebu as well as the security managements of malls, lodges, and beach resorts,” Entoma said.
He added that the police are not yet sure whether the six Abu Sayyaf members have already returned to Mindanao or if they are still staying in Cebu.
President Rodrigo Duterte has waged a war against the Abu Sayyaf, calling them criminals who cannot be negotiated with.

Last September 2, a terror attack at a night market in Davao City killed 14 people and wounded 70 others. The Abu Sayyaf claimed responsibility for the bombing but later said that it was one of their allies who did it.
The Abu Sayyaf is considered as the most violent criminal groups in the Philippines.
