Perfecto Jaime Tagalog, a self-proclaimed member of the Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption (VACC) and a former “supporter” of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte accuses the latter’s son, daughter-in-law, and public relations officer of being involved in smuggling activities in Davao City.
Tagalog said that the Duterte family has been partners with alleged smuggler Davidson Bangayan or David Tan. He went on to say that Duterte’s son Paolo or Polong, Polong’s wife, January, media operator Banayo, and a certain Glen Escandor are involved in rice smuggling activities happening at the Davao Port. He also said a certain Judith and a Rose Caballero brokerage firm are being used by couple Paolo and January for the illegal transactions. Tagalog claimed all the illegal transactions are being facilitated by a certain Toti Cabaniog.
To back up his claim, Tagalog cited reports from the Presidential Anti-Smuggling Task Group and the NBI.
The reports, dated December 7, 2007, states that an intelligence information disclosed “that a certain Glen Escandor, son of ret. Col. Escandor and owner of Mandaya Hotel and one Paolo Duterte aka Polong, son of Mayor Duterte of Davao City are business partners in smuggling activities and are responsible for the proliferation of suburban vehicles and high end cards in the area."
However, Tagalog could not comprehensively provide an answer when probed by the media with regard to his reports and findings. He also failed to prove how the Dutertes are involved in said smuggling.
Rose Roque, chief coordinator of the VACC, told the media that the latter is not a part of the group and that they are not responsible for his actions.
Furthermore, Banayo denied Tagalog’s claim of being Tan’s press relations man and stated that he still has not met the mayor’s son Paolo.
The Davao City mayor, on the other hand, challenged Tagalog and those who are making the allegations to produce concrete evidence of smuggling against his family members.
