The two adults responsible for the child arrived home just on time to rescue three other children from fire. The fired occurred in a house on the 4000 block of East Longfellow Avenue, which called 911 at around 11:30 pm.
Jerry Arabelo, the front neighbor, said he saw the flames coming out the house and heard screaming as he was preparing himself for bed. He urged his wife to contact 911 and ran outside to hook up his 150-feet water hose which was disconnected for winter.
Atabelo and another neighbor could control the fire with another hose until the firefighter arrived, but they didn’t know there were a child inside the house until a couple started screaming it out.
Schaeffer said they boy was found in a bedroom heavily damaged by fire. “it melted everything, there were no way to survive that”.
The house had a smoke detector without batteries. The cause of the fire is still unknown and the fire department is still investigating it
