- Former actor Alfred Vargas is now on his second term as the District 5 representative of Quezon City
- He was hurtful over the arrest and incarceration of his erstwhile co-worker and friend Mark Anthony Fernandez
- Alfred has proposed continuing rehabilitation and livelihood programs for reformed drug addicts
Another celebrity, a former one, has expressed his sadness over the arrest of Mark Anthony Fernandez - Alfred Vargas.
The current Quezon City District 5 representative said that he found it unfortunate that his friend and former co-worker has been incarcerated for his alleged crime.
"Nagkasama kami sa Darna, Impostora. Nalungkot ako kasi sayang. Talented siya at maraming umiidolo sa kanya and I know him personally, mabait si Mark. Mabait na tao si Mark at saka sana, mabigyan siya ng second chance."
(We have worked together on Darna, Impostora. I was sad because his arrest was ill-fated. He [Mark] is talented and a lot of people idolize him and I know him personally, Mark is nice. He is also a good person and I really hope that he will be given a second chance.)
It cannot be avoided that Alfred was asked about his friend and the government's ongoing campaign against drugs since he was formerly one of the industry's leading men. However, the administration's efforts regarding the matter has shifted to celebrities who have been using illegal drugs.
Philippine Entertainment Portal (PEP.ph) was able to talk to the actor-turned-politician in relation to these relevant issues.
Alfred said that celebrities are not exempt from the war on drugs and once these actors and actresses have been accused for their purported activities, it becomes magnified once the media has reported it on their pages.
In order to avoid the issue, he suggested that there should be talks in the industry - talents, managers, and producers - on how they should deal with it. Like Mark, he finds it unfortunate that many talents will not be given a chance to show their craft if they do not deal with this issue immediately.
He also said that his office is open for actors who have a drug problem, as he is willing to help them get back in the business through rehabilitation.
As a district representative, he shared that many drug addicts have surrendered themselves to his custody. It is through their actions that he has planned on creating long-term rehabilitation and livelihood programs with the barangay captains.
Although change has come slowly but surely, he is confident that there have been less hoodlums in his area.
President Rodrigo Duterte's war against drugs has become infamous for its extrajudicial killings, which is in the same league as this father who attempted to kill his own son.
