- The senator criticized Duterte’s comments that Marcos might become the next vice president if he wins his electoral protest against Robredo
- Aquino said that the Filipino people should assess and examine the controversial statement of Duterte
- However, the senator also admitted that the President might explain his statement by saying that he was just joking
Senator Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino on Thursday slammed President Rodrigo Duterte for introducing former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. as the next vice president of the Philippines during a visit in Beijing, China.
Marcos – a known ally and friend of Duterte – was defeated by Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo in the May 9 vice presidential election.
However, Marcos filed a protest in the Supreme Court to contest Robredo’s win, accusing the winner and her party of cheating the election.
“Personally, as somebody who supported the Vice President (Leni Robredo) it’s very troubling for me that that is the way he introduced him (Marcos),” Aquino said.
He added that the President might once again have “joked,” a common explanation for Duterte’s outrageous and shocking comments.
However, the senator explained that the people should look more into Duterte’s statement about Marcos as the next Vice President.
“I think it’s a call for all of us to be vigilant. In fact, it seems people have forgotten that there is a protest but maybe that’s a call to action to us to look at it more thoroughly,” he pointed out.
In his visit to China, Duterte said that Marcos might become the next vice president if he wins his electoral protest against Robredo.
During his first few weeks as the President, Duterte received backlash for allegedly snubbing and giving Robredo a cold shoulder.
But due to the efforts of Robredo, especially when she visited Duterte in Malacañang, the public felt that the supposed animosity between the two has already disappeared.
However, the recent comment of Duterte about Marcos has raised eyebrows once again, with some observers theorizing that the current administration might be making some moves to depose Robredo.
