MEETING & DIALOGUE WITH MEMBERS OF VEGGIE GROWERS ASSOCIATION
Kuya Ricky met the love of his life, Maria in 2007, and moved back to her hometown in Sibunag, Guimaras. Born in Naga, kuya Ricky has yet to return to his birthplace where his entire family awaits to meet his beloved wife for the first time.
Living in Sibunag, Guimaras has been a struggle for the couple. With an average monthly income of Php 2,000, and sometimes Php 3,000 on good months, they try to make ends meet by planting malunggay, kalabasa, and other low-yield vegetables. A middleman buys their produce to sell to the market, cutting off a few more pesos to what the family initially could have earned.
Kuya Ricky yearns to come back home to Naga, where his sister Nene was a former employee of the late Sec. Jesse. VP Leni heard of this when she visited Sibunag and asked to see kuya Ricky, mentioning that, "Iyong ate niya, parang kapamilya na namin."
"Gusto ko po sanang makauwi, nag-iipon pa po kaming mag-asawa. Namimiss ko na po ang Naga, lalo na ang pamilya ko," kuya Ricky shares while talking to VP Leni. "Mahirap po ang buhay dito sa Guimaras, lalo na hindi kami direktang makapagbenta sa palengke. Pero kaya naman po."
Kuya Ricky is working hard to save up and see his family back in Naga. In the meantime, he does his part to supply for the market in Sibunag, albeit indirectly. He hopes that one day, small farmers are able to sell their produce directly to the marketplace with available product-transport support, which maximizes their income and makes his dream of coming home to Naga closer to reality.
