- A woman from Minnesota has plead guilty to attacking a Muslim Applebee’s customer
- The Kenyan immigrant got hit with a beer mug
- The entire incident is being considered a hate crime
A 44-year old woman from Minnesota has plead guilty to third-degree assault, after being indicted for smashing the face of a Muslim woman with a beer mug, when she heard her speaking Swahili.
Both women were sitting at an Applebee’s restaurant in October 2015 when the incident happened. Jodie Burchard-Risch and her husband overheard Asma Jama speaking the foreign language, so they started yelling at her and her friends that “in America, we speak English,” and “Go home”.
The restaurant’s staff asked Mrs Burchard-Risch to leave, but instead she forcefully lunged at Jama with a beer mug in the face. Jama ended up with a bloody nose and cuts to her forehead and mouth, which required 17 stitches.
The woman was indicted, and after a trial that went for almost a year, she was sentenced to 180 days in jail and five years of probation. Jama said she was grateful and glad regarding Burchard-Risch’s guilty plea. She has commented the attack took a toll on her and her confidence.
The woman, who is originally from Kenya, claims the whole issue has been a personal fight for justice. Muslim civil rights advocates are referring to the incident as a hate crime.
Jama has been living in Minnesota for 16 years after she left Kenya. She is glad to know that at least Burchard-Risch admitted she attacked her because of her bias.
