Senator Leila de Lima expresses her empathy for Senator Richard "Dick" Gordon's anger towards the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) Commissioner Roberto Eugenio Cadiz's "coward" remark.
According to the lady senator, she understands her colleagues anger. However, she also urged everyone to give importance to the hearing on extrajudicial killings (EJK).
"Sana ihiwalay 'yung issue na 'yan tungkol sa absence of apology o insufficient apology. Itong inquiry ay tungkol sa EJKs. Ito po 'yung mas importanteng issue," says De Lima.
In an earlier statement, Gordon had said that the attack was directed at the Senate. He categorically announced that he would not call the CHR witnesses and officials to testify in the hearing set for Thursday, October 13 if the CHR does not apologize for the rude remark.
"Let that commissioner skunk out of his responsibility," says Gordon.
"He doesn't deserve the dignity of being named here," he added.
This was given as a response to Commissioner Cadiz's statement wherein he was quoted saying: "I challenge him, as a commissioner: The only way for him to recover his credibility as chairman is to continue with the hearing and listen to the other witnesses. Otherwise, there is every reason to believe he is the coward here and not Matobato or De Lima."
As of press time, officials from the Philippine National Police (PNP) and Chairman Jose Luis Martin "Chito" Gascon of the CHR were spotted in Senate hearing on EJK cases.
