Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach and the Department of Tourism both expressed their desire and support for Philippines to host the 2016 Miss Universe beauty pageant after reports claimed that the organizers pulled the plug.
The Department of Tourism released a statement to addressed online petition from concerned citizens and women leaders requesting Miss Universe organizers to stop the plan to hold the pageant in the Philippines.

In a statement, DOT said that the government’s decision to accept the offer of Miss Universe Organization to host the pageant has gained an overwhelming support especially among Filipino women and their families. Meanwhile, as the agency gives due respect to such opinion and assures everyone that they deem it a great honor to host the pageant.
Also, the DOT said that it would be beneficial for the local businesses, livelihood and the travel and tour sector as it would be a big-boost to the country’s tourism promotion program. DOT also expresses its utmost gratitude to the Miss Universe Organization for giving the great opportunity to treat the world to genuine Filipino hospitality.
Meanwhile, reigning Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach who has previously met President Duterte with regards to hosting the pageant vows to fight for holding Miss Universe in the Philippines.
Pia Wurtbach said in Twitter; “Akong bahala guys. Kalma lang. Ipaglalaban ko yan. (Don’t worry guys. Relax. I will fight for it. )I want the competition in my home country!”
The petition not to hold the Miss Universe Pageant in Philippines is a protest to the demeaning sexist attitude of President Rodrigo Duterte and other elected leaders of the country including their comments about women. The concerns over issues of political instability and security were also mentioned in the petition letter.
The Philippines hosted the Miss Universe pageant in 1974 and 1994.
