Inhaling the fetid odor of farts may actually be good for your health. At least that is what scientists at the University of Exeter have found out. A recent study has indicated that it can even prevent cancer.
When bacteria breaks down food, the body produces hydrogen sulfide gas, which is known as the foul smell humans produce and expel, sometimes in a noisy manner. This "could in fact be a healthcare hero with significant implications for future therapies for a variety of diseases," Dr. Mark Wood said in a university release.
The experts from Exeter Medical School have discovered that small doses of fart-whiffing –yes, just a little bit, so don’t overdo it!– can reduce the risk of heart attacks, cancer, arthritis, strokes and dementia. The gas helps preserve mitochondria.
Researchers are coming up with their own compound, which they have called AP39, which emulates the smell's health benefits. 'It slowly delivers very small amounts of this gas specifically to the mitochondria,' explains Professor Matt Whiteman.
Results have indicated that if stressed cells are treated with AP39, mitochondria are protected and cells stay alive.
