Anti-crime advocates from among the Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption (VACC) filed charges against Senator Leila De Lima and 7 others on Tuesday, October 11, for their alleged involvement in the national penitentiary drug trade.
According to Dante Jimenez, VACC's founding chairman, "We really are surprised & saddened that former SOJ for the first time is being charged regarding illegal drug trade inside NBP."
He also said that the members of the VACC, being the stakeholders in the national penitentiary, find it insulting that the very people who had killed their loved ones - those convicted for heinous crimes - not only enjoyed drug trading, but also engaged in money-making schemes, prostitution, and arms dealing.
"Kami sa VACC will not wait. Kapag nakita naming may probable cause, file it with the proper agency," Jimenez said.
Jimenez clarified on Monday that after several hearings at the House of Representatives (HoR), their group has decided on filing charges for the violation of the Section 5 of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.
Section 5 of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drug Act covers the sale, trading, administration, dispensation, delivery, distribution and transportation of dangerous drugs and/or controlled precursors and essential chemicals.
"Each one of them had played significant roles in order to ensure the perpetuation of the illegal drug trade inside the Bilibid," stated the complaint filed by Jimenez.
Ferdinand Topacio, Herbert Colanggo's counsel had prepared the complaints, which will undergo preliminary investigations.
"Kumpiyansa kami na makukumpleto ito including mga material evidence, paper trail regarding pera," Jimenez also said.
(We're confident that this will be completed including the material evidence, paper trail regarding the money.)
"Nakikita namin dito, higher probable cause & hopefully DOJ, through the system, will proceed with the filing of appropriate case," Jimenez concluded.
(We see probable cause here & hopefully, the DOJ, through the system, will proceed with the filing of the appropriate case.)
