An enraged man on Sunday caused chaos inside SM City Dasmariñas in Cavite – taking 16 hostages, wounding three people, and killing one mall-goer before he himself was killed by the responding policemen.
The suspect – 32-year-old Carlo Marcus Lacdao – was shot dead by the cops after they found out that he stabbed to death one of his hostages.
The dead victim was identified as 48-year-old Roberto Rosales, one of the 16 hostages taken by the suspect into a narrow corridor near the comfort rooms on the ground floor of the SM mall.
Three others were wounded during the incident – Jollabelle Sumalin, Michaela Mae Honor and Rodel Lazano. The other hostages were left unharmed and were released during negotiations with the cops.
Based on the initial investigations, Lacdao came from Dulag, Leyte and arrived at the SM mall at approximately 12:45 p.m. aggressively looking for his wife, Erna, who he suspected of cheating on him with another man. Erna worked at SM Dasmariñas as a janitor for the restrooms of the mall.
When he could not find his wife, Lacdao started to attack mall-goers with a knife and took 16 of them hostage. After releasing 11 hostages during the negotiation, he took another female hostage named Mylene Balajadia.
According to the police, they tried to negotiate with the hostage-taker to release his other hostages but he would not give in. The wife also tried to help in the negotiations but Lacdao became angrier when he finally saw her.
