Despite his recent 'rape joke' scandal and campaigning in Iloilo where rival Manuel Roxas II tops surveys, Davao City Mayor Duterte attracted an overwhelming number of people.
As he started his campaign on the vote-rich province in the Western Visayas region, Duterte answered questions thrown his way at the University of the Philippines Visayas. The day of the campaign was held after he apologized for the crude remark he got criticized for.
The students asked him regarding his anti-crime plan and how he will accomplish on which the presidential candidate answered with "The police, I will double their salaries…the usual excuse is that it's insufficient, it really is…How do you expect that policeman to survive with 2 or 3 children with that salary? They will resort to corruption."
UP Visayas students have mixed opinion regarding Duterte's choice of words and manner of speaking as reported on Rappler. One student said that he still backs the presidential aspirant as he depends on Duterte's platform and not on his personality.
"It did affect my opinion of him negatively, because of that comment." said another student when Rappler asked if Duterte's rape joke made an impact on his vote.
During the campaign event, Duterte tried his best to steer away from talking about Roxas knowing that Iloilo, with its 1.35M voters are mostly supporters of the Liberal party members.
