- ABC Indonesian correspondent revealed that the ‘green light’ of President Duterte to execute Filipino mule Mary Jane Veloso was affirmed in the Widodo audio
- In the Widodo audio, Widodo said that Duterte said “Please go ahead”
- Harvey also uploaded the raw Widodo audio online for public consumption
Confronted by conflicting reports between statements from Indonesian press and Malacañang, a journalist based in Indonesia revealed that an audio recording of Widodo’s statement affirms President Duterte giving the green light to execute Filipino Mary Jane Veloso.
Adam Harvey, correspondent of ABC in Indonesia, said that the Widodo audio contains statements of President Widodo when he was speaking in front of the Serang Banten mosque for the Eid’l Adha and there Widodo revealed that the President of the Philippines gave the green light to execute Veloso.
Harvey has the raw audio clip of Widodo’s statements, which he uploaded and shared online.
Based on the English translation, which Harvey also posted, the conversation between Widodo and Duterte, as recalled by the former, went like this:
“I told him that she carried 2.6 kilogram heroin and I told him about the reasons for the delay of her execution. President Duterte then said ‘Please go ahead’ if you want to execute her,” said Widodo.
Again, based on the Widodo audio where Veloso’s execution was the subject, one journalist even asked “how about the legal process?”
To this question, Widodo answered, “Attorney general will handle it, but that’s what President Duterte said.”
When news came out about Duterte’s “green light” on Widodo execution, the palace, through Foreign Affairs Secretary Perfecto Yasay, was quick to deny such statement from the President.
He clarified it saying that what Duterte said to Widodo was only to “follow your own law” and that he will not interfere.
However, when Harvey learned of the statement of the Philippine government, he was quick to tweet that it was not how the Indonesian President remembered their conversation.
As proof of this, he said that they have the audio of Widodo. “That’s not how @jokowi remembers the conversation. We have the audio of the Indonesian president’s comments,” tweeted Harvey.
According to reports, the reason why Duterte was in haste to go to Indonesia after the ASEAS was to raise Veloso’s case. Yasay also mentioned that the the execution was postponed because such was not an urgent issue for Indonesia.
