De Lima slams Duterte anew

De Lima slams Duterte anew

In an INQlive interview, Tuesday night, former Secretary of Justice and senatorial candidate Leila De Lima described Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte’s 3-6 month plan to curb corruption and crime as a “complete illusion”.

De Lima said that it is impossible to achieve his goal because law enforcement capabilities should still be strengthened. She added that Duterte’s plan will only succeed if extrajudicial killings are conducted. De Lima chided that such killings are unacceptable.

I am always the first to speak out taking him to task,” she said. “I am never silent when it comes to mayor Duterte. I cannot stand anymore his stand of impunity.

The former justice secretary was the  chairman of the Commission on Human Rights in 2008,  and she said that she launched an investigation into the Davao Death Squad during Duterte’s term as a city mayor.

De Lima added that the rise of Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte in recent surveys is “extremely frightening and disturbing”.

She said: “Number one siya ngayon sa mga surveys. Where is that coming from?

De Lima earlier slammed Duterte for his recent controversial remarks about the 1989 gang rape and murder of Australian missionary Jaqueline Hamill in a detention cell in Davao City.

“There are limits and there are standards for public speech,” she said.

In the recent Pulse Asia survey commissioned by ABS-CBN, Duterte gained a solo lead with  32 percent of voter preference while Sen. Grace Poe only had 25 percent.

The squabble between Duterte and De Lima goes way back. Duterte earlier described De Lima as “bugokski” –  slang for stupid.

She wanted me punished for my statement in the Senate. Ang sinabi ko, bright ka man kaya, pareho tayo ng eskwelahan, bakit bugokski ka? (I said, you are intelligent, we came from the same school, then why are you stupid?),” Duterte said, referring to his spat with De Lima during a Senate hearing on the alleged rice smuggling activities of Davidson Bangayan.
