President Rodrigo Duterte said on Saturday that he would be reassigning corrupt government officials in areas in Mindanao that are hit by conflict.
During his arrival speech at the Davao International Airport,President Duterte told reporters that his campaign against corruption will continue.
He said: “When I said that corruption will stop, it will stop. Maniwala kayo…To all government (employees), ‘wag ninyo akong hiyain dito.”
(When I said that corruption will stop, it will stop. Believe me... To all government employees, do not embarrass me.)
He further said that he would be "happy" to assign corrupt government officials in Basilan and Cebu. He stated: “I am planning to put an extension office of the national government, I plan to put it in Basilan or Jolo. Be my guest, I will be happy to assign you there.”
The president mentioned that he will be installing cameras in the said areas. He explained, citing the secret police agency of Nazi Germany: “I will place cameras there, like a Gestapo. And it’s perfectly alright for me. Why? This is government. This is not a private enterprise. There is no such thing as a violation of privacy there.”
Philippine government and Islamist militants in the island province of Basilan and the town of Jolo in Sulu have been destructed by strife.
According to Duterte, poor Filipinos were mostly the victims of graft and corruption in the government.
“Huwag ninyong galawin ang maliit na tao, kasi sila ang nangangailangan ng gobyerno," Duterte said.
